The latest in my print series on classic Chicago home styles. These home and building styles represent a large majority of the so-called "vernacular" homes, built according to local needs and traditions and without an architect. These styles were built primarily in the period between the Great Fire and the Great Depression.
The Courtyard Apartment Building is one of the key styles of the city, distinctively beautiful and functional. This style can be found all over the city, but is particularly visible in Rogers Park and Kenwood. Most were built in the 1920's.
These drawings of courtyard buildings were made by hand in pen and ink and are based on actual buildings throughout the city of Chicago.
